A Chaste Maid in Cheapside
by Thomas Middleton
3rd – 28th March 2015 Tuesdays to Saturdays 7.30pm, Sundays at 3pm
The Rose Playhouse, Bankside.
After the rip-roaring success of Thomas Middleton's A TRICK TO CATCH THE OLD ONE Mercurius returns to The Rose with another rollicking Middleton comedy - A CHASTE MAID IN CHEAPSIDE which takes a satirical look at the forlorn attempts of London's new middle classes to scramble up the slippery pole of wealth and influence.
Ambitious goldsmith Yellowhammer and his wife desperately push their daughter at rich Sir Walter Whorehound; who in turn is trying to offload his mistress, disguised as a respectable widow, to their son. Meanwhile willing cuckold Master Allwit welcomes Sir Walter as his wife's lover and raises their children as his own in return for a fat paycheque. All the while Touchwood Senior rents himself out to childless couples as a walking inseminator, threatening to disinherit Sir Walter; as his younger brother tries to steal Yellowhammer's daughter away from Sir Walter's clutches. Plots chase each other in an ever accelerating circle until chaos ensues amid wild hilarity and lots of happy endings.
